The Story of Jack-o-lantern

Long ago, there was a stingy Irish man. His name is “ Jack ”. He loved drinking and playing tricks on friends. Soon, no one wanted to be Jack ’ s friends.

One evening, when Jack was drinking, he had no money to pay the drink. Suddenly, the Devil showed up.

Jack came out an idea. I will go with you if you change yourself to a coin to pay the bill for me. Deal!

The Devil turned himself into a coin, but Jack quickly put the coin in his purse. Because Jack had a silver cross in his purse, the Devil could not change himself back

After a while, Jack yelled, The Devil gave his promise quickly. Jack laughed as he opened the purse, and the Devil flew out in a flash. “ Devil, I ’ ll let you go if you promise never to take my soul in 10 YEARS! ”

10 years later. One day, Jack came across the Devil while walking on a country road. The Devil wanted to take his soul, but Jack said, "I'll go, but before I go, will you get me an apple from that tree?"

The Devil, thinking he had nothing to lose, jumped on Jack's shoulders to get the apple. Jack took out his knife and carved a cross in the trunk of the tree. The Devil lost his power and couldn’t come down from the tree.

Jack made the Devil promise to never again ask for his soul. The Devil agreed and Jack let him go. The Devil lost his power and couldn’t come down from the tree.

Years later, Jack died. His soul went up to Heaven, but of course, he was not welcome there. Jack then went down to Hell, but the Devil wouldn’t let him in. Where can I go? You will wander in the darkness between Heaven and hell forever.

Then he threw a burning piece of coal at Jack before he closed the gate. Jack picked up the coal with a hollow turnip, feeling so sad.

As he walked away, he carved some holes in the turnip and made a lantern out of it so that he could have something to light his way. With the lantern, Jack wandered in the darkness forever.

In the early days, the lanterns were carved from turnips by the Irish and were called “Jack-o’-lanterns.” They symbolized Jack’s miserable soul and were used to scare wandering ghosts away.

When Irish immigrants first arrived in the US, they found pumpkins and used them to replace turnips for their jack-o-lanterns.
