Ancient India

Harappan Civilization Harappan civilization began around the Indus River around 2500BC. It is also known as the Indus Valley Civilization. Ancient India (Indus River Valley)

Ancient India (Indus River Valley)

(Tigris/Euphrates River Valley) Ancient India (Indus River Valley) Ancient Egypt (Nile River Valley) Ancient Mesopotamia (Tigris/Euphrates River Valley) Ancient India (Indus River Valley)

Cities Two major cities of the Indus Valley Civilization Harappa Mohenjo-Daro

Thank you rivers! Similar to the civilizations of Mesopotamia, and Egypt, Harappan civilization depended on the rivers for fertile soil and water for agriculture.

Mysteries of Harappan Civilization Around 1750BCE Harappan civilization declined and eventually disappeared. Declined means things got very bad or “worsened” WHY?? Archaeologists think: #1 A nomadic group called the Aryans may have attacked and taken over. #2 Another river called the Sarasvati River dried up. This may have made life in Harappan civilization impossible.

The Aryans The Aryans were nomads who herded cows in central India. Around 1500 BCE the Aryans migrated to the Indus river valley and developed a civilization there.

Check yourself! What was the first civilization to develop in India? True/False: Indus valley is the same as Harappan civilization What river did the Harappan civilization settle near? What were the two major cities in the Indus River Valley? Why did the Harappan civilization develop near a river? What happened to the Harappan civilization in 1700BCE? What group of people migrated to the Indus River Valley?
