5 Ancient River Valley Civilizations
Which is farthest west? Farthest east? Which uses two rivers? What are they called? What is mesopotamia also known as? Why?

6 Harappan Civilization
Harappan civilization began along the Indus River around 2500 BCE.  It is also known as the Indus Valley civilization.

7 Cities Two major cities of Indus Valley Civilization: 1. Harappa
2. Mohenjo-Daro

8 Thank the Rivers! Like civilizations in Mesopotamia and Ancient Egypt, Harappan civilization depended on the rivers for fertile soil and water for agriculture.

9 Harappan Civilization
Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro were large, well- planned cities in ancient India. The cities had wells, drains for wastewater, garbage chutes, and organized governments. The houses were made from baked mud bricks.

10 Mysteries of Harappan Civilization
Around 1700 BCE Harappan civilization declined and eventually disappeared. WHY??! Archaeologists think: A nomadic group called the Aryans may have attacked and taken over. Another river, called the Sarasvati River, dried up. This may have made life in Harappan civilizations impossible.

11 The Aryans The Aryans were nomads who herded cows in central Asia.
Around 1500 B.C.E, Aryans migrated to the Indus River Valley and developed a civilization there. What does migrate mean?

12 The Aryans The Aryans developed a written language called Sanskrit.
Aryan tribes were led by a raja, or prince.

13 Check for Understanding
What was the first civilization to develop in Ancient India? True or False: Indus Valley is the same as the Harappan civilization. What river did the Harappan civilization settle near? What were two major cities in the Indus Valley Civilization? Why did the Harappan civilization develop near a river?

14 Check for Understanding
What happened to the Harappan civilization in 1700 BCE? Why do archaeologists think the Indus Valley civilization declined? Which group of people migrated to the Indus Valley after Harappan civilization declined? Why major development did the Aryans contribute?
