MUHAMMAD Muhammad was born in 570 A.D. in the city of Mecca. Muhammad became a caravan trader traveling the world and interacting with a variety of people (Jews, Christians, Arabs, etc.)…monotheistic and polytheistic.

MUHAMMAD CHOSEN AS A PROPHET When Muhammad was 40 years old he was visited by the Angel Gabriel and given verses to recite (Ramadan). Over the years Muhammad reported receiving many more revelations from Gabriel (the revelations are found in the Qur’an). It is believed that at one time Muhammad was taken up into the heavens and taught the gospel for 1 week.

DOME OF THE ROCK: Jerusalem The Muslims later built a temple on the spot where it is believed that Muhammad was taken up into the heavens. This spot is the same location where 1) Abraham was commanded to sacrifice his son. 2) Site of Solomon’s temple. 3) Location of the Last Supper, Crucifixion, and Resurrection.

MUHAMMAD EXPELLED Muhammad’s teachings were initially rejected by the people of Mecca and Muhammad was expelled from the city. Muhammad flees to Medina (hijrah) where his teachings are accepted. Many are converted to Islam. In 624 A.D. Muhammad and his followers attack Mecca to get revenge for his expulsion. People who refuse to convert to Islam are killed. Mecca surrenders in 630 A.D.

MECCA AND THE KAABA Muhammad destroys the thousands of idols in the Kaaba and turns it into a holy place for his followers. Muhammad rededicated the Kaaba to the worship of one god, Allah. Muhammad dies in 632 A.D. but almost every Arab tribe had already converted to Islam.
