Presentation transcript:

Let’s Prep 1. Read through the powerpoint and watch the dissection videos. 2. On a piece of white copy paper, draw the top and bottom of the starfish. 3. Label the following parts on the drawing: Top Side- Aboral- Dorsal a. Central Disk b. Madreporite c. Eyespot d. Arm/Ray e. Spines Bottom Side- Oral- Ventral a. Mouth b. Ambulacral groove c. Tube Feet 1. Draw a comic strip of a starfish eating a clam. 2. Answer the following questions: a. What class of invertebrates does a starfish belong to? b. Why do they now call it a seastar and not a starfish? c. What is the purpose of the tube feet? d. Describe the clean up procedure for the dissection. e. Summarize the 13 steps of the directions into one paragraph.

Inside the Starfish 2 Stomachs Pyloric Stomach Cardiac Stomach Digestive Glands Ampullae Ring Canal Reproductive Glands

Water Vascular System Water enters the madreporite, through the stone canal, into the ring canal, down through the ampullae into the tube feet to provide the suction

Steps 1. Identify all external anatomy on aboral and oral surfaces. - Madreporite, ambulacral groove, mouth, eyespot, arm/ray, central disk, tube feet 2. On one arm, cut with scissors about 2 centimeters off. 3. Continue with the same arm, cut with scissors down both sides. Careful to cut only through the skin. 4. Cut along the top of the arm to cut off skin. Careful to not damage the central disk. 5. Remove skin.

Steps 6. Remove digestive and reproductive glands with forceps, place to the side. 7. Examine ampullae. 8. Using scalpel, cut through central disk(go around madreporite). Careful to not damage the stomachs. 9. Remove central disk. 10. Examine madreporite, find the stone canal that leads into the ring canal. 11. Examine pyloric stomach. Find the canals that attach to the stomach and lead into each arm. Remove and set to the side. 12. Examine the cardiac stomach. Remove and set to the side. 13. Examine the mouth.

Clean Up Throw away starfish and all parts that were removed into the large trash can. Wipe out the dissecting tray. Wipe off all tools except the scalpel. Wipe off tables. Put tray and tools back into center of table. Last period- group tools/tray on front counter Remove gloves and throw away. Remove apron and fold up. Place in stack with others. When the entire table is clean, then you may ask to wash your hands.
