M ETRIC M EASUREMENT Only 3 countries in the world have NOT adopted the metric system as their official measurement system… Who are they????

W HY METRICS ? It’s a standard based on the distance from the north pole to the equator, so it is available to everyone and will never change Uses a base 10 for easy math! The prefixes are the same for all 3 units of measure (length, mass, and volume) See the prefixes and their relationship here

M EASURING L ENGTH OR D ISTANCE Base unit is the meter Use a metric ruler or meter stick 1 cm = 10 mm AND 1 mm = 0.1 cm So… How long is this line? Answer in cm? In mm?

Y OUR T URN 1. Write the title “Measurement Practice” on a clean page in your folder. 2. Write a subheading “Length,” and number the paper 1-5 below the subheading. 3. With a partner, use a ruler to measure the following items: 1. Length of one floor tile 2. Diameter of a penny 3. Width of the fire blanket box (across the front) 4. Length of an unsharpened pencil 5. Width of a small index card

M EASURING V OLUME Volume is the amount of space something takes up Liquid volume is measured in liters, where one liter is the amount of water in a box 1000 cm 3 The tool used is a graduated cylinder Read the volume of the liquid in the cylinder at eye level at the bottom of the meniscusmeniscus

A LL G RADUATED C YLINDERS A RE NOT THE S AME !!! You must determine the scale or value of the cylinder before finding the volume! ΑΒC

N OW, FIND THE VOLUME … ΑΒ C

Y OUR T URN 1. Write the subheading “Volume” under the 5 length measurements you recorded. 2. With a new partner, go to 5 of the graduated cylinders at the lab stations and find the volume of the liquid in the graduated cylinder. 3. Record the cylinder letter and the answer in your folder. Be sure to use correct units.

M EASURING M ASS Mass is the amount of matter that something is made of The base unit is the gram, a gram is the mass of water with a volume of 1 cm 3 The tool used to measure mass is the triple beam balance

F INDING M ASS U SING THE B ALANCE First, zero the balance… 1. slide all the riders to the left 2. use the adjustment screw to level the pointer Then, mass the object… 1. move the largest rider across notch by notch until the pointer falls below zero, then move it back one notch 2. repeat this with the medium-sized rider 3. slide the smallest rider across the beam until the pointer is level 4. sum the three riders to calculate the mass

F IND THE MASS …

Y OUR T URN 1. Write the subheading “Mass” under the 5 volume measurements you recorded. 2. With a new partner, go to 3 of the triple-beam balances at the lab stations and find the mass of the object next to the balance. 3. Record the name of the object and the answer in your folder. Be sure to use correct units.

M EASURING T EMPERATURE Temperature is measured in degrees Celsius 0° C is the freezing point of water and 100° C is the boiling point of water What does the thermometer read?

M ETRIC N OTES Length The ____________ between two points Base unit is the ___________ Volume The amount of ___________ something takes up Base unit is the ____________ Mass The amount of __________ that something has Base unit is the ___________ Temperature The amount of __________ Base unit is the ____________ _____________

M ETRIC N OTES Length The distance between two points Base unit is the meter Volume The amount of space something takes up Base unit is the liter Mass The amount of matter that something has Base unit is the gram Temperature The amount of energy Base unit is the degree Celsius
