NEPAD’S COMPREHENSIVE AFRICA AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME Goal: Agriculture-led development that eliminates hunger, reduces poverty and food insecurity, opening the way for export expansion Vision: By 2015 – Improve the productivity of agriculture to attain an average annual growth rate of 6% Pillar 1: Extend the area under sustainable land management and reliable water control systems - Only 3.7% of arable land is irrigated in -Sub-Saharan Africa -South America (10%); S/E Asia (29%), South Asia (41%) Improve Rural Infrastructure and trade related capacities - for market access -Roads, Markets, Packaging, Handling systems, Input supply Networks Rail Freight = 2% of world total Marine Freight = 11% of world total (foreign owned) Air Freight =1% of world total Increase food supply, reduce hunger and improve responses to food emergency crises -Low farm productivity levels -- Civil conflict Improve agricultural research, technology dissemination and adoption to provide the scientific underpinning necessary for term productivity and competitiveness - accelerated gains in productivity
