What can housing providers do to support employability Helen Forsyth Director of Regeneration, Scotland

Traditional approach   Housing providers were just landlords   Concerned with letting, maintaining homes   Pursuing housing association grant to develop further housing   Providing housing of high quality to wide range of people with different needs

Factors affecting letting of houses   Shift in peoples aspirations   Environmental: Location, location, location   Housing of last resort   Communities becoming ghettos of more vulnerable people

Taking action   Housing providers have to acquire skills to look at issues affecting communities   Housing providers have to be large enough to resource staff to work on other issues   Housing providers have to work in partnerships they have not considered before

Taking action 2   Community Housing Associations of reasonable size develop workspaces for small businesses   Develop Modern Apprenticeships   Develop landscaping and maintenance training teams   Look at range of issues around employment and enterprise

Places for People   Large group of companies all not for profit   Several Landlords and associated companies   Allows more time to be spent on other areas to fulfil mission

So what are we doing?   In Edinburgh there are lots of employment training schemes   young people still come out of education to being NEET   Unemployment amongst males in social inclusion areas can soar to 15%   30,000 people of employment age are not employed
