12-nov-2003Muon Plenary, R.Richter1 Status of MDT elx and services ON-chamber –mezzanines –ON-chamber cables –hedgehog boards –CSM Motherboard –CSM Daughterboard OFF-chamber –LV supplies & cables –HV supplies & cables –Optical cables –MROD

12-nov-2003Muon Plenary, R.Richter2 ON-chamber components mezzanines –2000 delivered --> burn-in --> test (2 weeks) –1000 expected this week –all components at companies –other by end of 2003 –remaining 2600 early next year ON-chamber cables –"american" part on order –for barrel prototyping about 600 on order –for others: decision to be taken  get on critical path. Price enquiry in europe gave no big savings (A.L.)

12-nov-2003Muon Plenary, R.Richter3 EMS1 ON-chamber Cabling

12-nov-2003Muon Plenary, R.Richter4 ON-chamber components, cntd. CSM Motherboard –260 ("american" part) on order – 50 on order for barrel prototyping –1050 (remaining production): DR & price enquiry at CERN has been started; financing assured from C&C  OK CSM Daughterboard (active part) –final prototype to go ut (25 pieces) –rad. tol. tests done –FDR under way –GOL and TTC problems seem to be solved –will be financed from C&C; but mind 200 kCHF limit!

12-nov-2003Muon Plenary, R.Richter5 OFF-chamber components LV supplies (A.L., M.B.) –Budget allocated by INFN (two MDTs per supply channel) –discussion with CAEN on nov., 5th; cost offer demanded –need 175 supplies à 15 A and 425 à 25 A –CAEN estimates 8 months to first prototype LV cables (R.R.) –cost offer for 36 km demanded from LAPP-cable estimated: 130 kCHF, unshielded, 190 kCHF shielded = 108 CHF resp. 158 CHF per chamber delivery time: 8 weeks –proposal: take shielded cable –how to finance? (part of chamber?, part of CSM)

12-nov-2003Muon Plenary, R.Richter6 LV supply architecture for MDTs 1)One or more chambers (n) may be supplied from one PS. 2)If n > 1, currents may be exchanged between chambers via the common return (s. diagram). 3)In general the current I consists of a DC-part plus a small AC admixture, CH1 being a variable load (e.g.: current may depend on the digital activity in CH1). CH2 sees a fraction of the AC-part of I 1, due to the common current return path. The resistance of the return path translates into an AC voltage on the ground of CH2 caused by CH1 (and vice versa). 4)The perturbation to CH2 depends on a)amplitude and frequency of I 12 b)frequency response of the amplifiers c)thresholds of the discriminators of CH2 5)Depending on 4) there may be a)no effect b)an increase of noise c)a danger of oscillation of all amplifiers (in particular for large n) What is the expected situation for the MDT and n=2 ?

12-nov-2003Muon Plenary, R.Richter7 Available Cable Types  Cost offer for 30 km arrived 3,54 €/m x 36 km = 126 k€ = 190 kCHF = 158 CHF/MDT NEW: 3,43 E/m = 155 CHF/MDT 2,4 €/m x 36 km = 86 k€ = 130 kCHF = 108 CHF/MDT NEW: 2,19 E/m

12-nov-2003Muon Plenary, R.Richter8 Cable Cost Offer for Quantities MDT/RPC 4 x 6 mm2 2,19 E/m 3,43 E/m RPC 4 x 25 mm2 8,72 E/m 8,96 E/m RPC 4 x 2,5 mm2 0,82 E/m 2,40 E/m

12-nov-2003Muon Plenary, R.Richter9 OFF-chamber components, cnt'd HV supplies (A.L.) –Budget allocated by INFN (two multilayers per supply channel) –discussion with CAEN on nov., 5th: general cost increase by 20% since 3 months ago (after INFN budget allocation...) –cost offer demanded for baseline and higher modularity (12  24, 36 channels per module?) –explore other alternatives (move HV supplies to US15?) HV cables –covered by INFN –72 km needed; Stores cost: 1 CHF/m  make price enquiry

12-nov-2003Muon Plenary, R.Richter10 OFF-chamber components, cnt'd Optical Cables –funding agency not clear from MoU: is it part of CSM or part of MROD (off chamber r/o) ? –gold plated concept with patch panels is about 330 kCHF for 1200 chambers. All components could be ordered inside of frame contract of LHC machine with the DRAKA company –if no patch panels needed (cables from MROD to CSM): cost about 1/3  need decision on PP and funding

12-nov-2003Muon Plenary, R.Richter11 Cost structure of optical fiber system with PPs [CHF] in-situ fiber termination is biggest cost factor; fiber is only 15% of cost using ducts allows to place and re-place fibers later

12-nov-2003Muon Plenary, R.Richter12 Summary cables on critical path for installation (ON- and off chamber) –financing –technical decisions on LV shields –technical decision on PPs for optical fibers –procuring still on schedule, but needs decisions decision on CSM-2 –wait for 25 prototypes, test –need 2 CSMs for EI chambers
