EU Research on Grids - A status update and the transition to the 6 th Research Framework Programme - Kyriakos Baxevanidis European Commission, DG INFSO HealthGrid meeting (20/09/2002, Brussels)

Overview The Grid solution RTD efforts in Europe - an overview Current effort in FP5 IST-Programme of the EU New IST initiatives are starting soon - new trends Synergies, clustering of efforts Migrating to the EU FP6 for Research Grids in FP6 - context and important priorities Some conclusions

The Grid solution A middle-ware layer that provides for the effective harnessing of information resources available world-wide making them accessible as a single resource for every user on the web Resources can be of any information type (computing, storage, networking, visualization etc) Access to them is provided in a secure, seamless, coordinated, dynamic & inexpensive way Forming dynamic Virtual Organisations

RTD efforts in Europe - an overview Foster cohesion, interoperability, cross- fertilization of knowledge, economies of scale, critical mass Increase value Multiply impact EU (IST-Programme: the “flagship”) National

Grids in IST: some facts Currently on-going initiatives: DATAGRID, CROSSGRID, DATATAG, EUROGRID, GRIP, DAMIEN, GRIDLAB, GRIA, EGSO, GRIDSTART) (more info under: - the main underlying connectivity platform <2,5Gbit/s 2,5Gbit/s 10 Gbit/s Japan US Canada Є80m EC funding A Cross Programme Action in IST 19 IST-funded projects, 50m total funding

The currently on-going IST Grid projects G R I D ST A R T GRIDLAB GRIA EGSO DATATAG CROSSGRID DATAGRID Applications GRIP EUROGRID DAMIEN Middleware & Tools Underlying Infrastructures Science Industry / business - Links with European National efforts - Links with US projects (GriPhyN, PPDG, iVDGL,…)

Major impact to Application Communities Virtual collaboratories lead to new work models & application community structures. In IST: High Energy Physics Earth & Space Observation Environment, Weather forecast Bio-sciences and Health Industrial design/simulation/ visualization ASP CERN-LHC ESA EADS-AerospaceBio-Sciences

Grids in FP6: Tomorrow’s future A new class of Grid-based infrastructure across Europe A new generation of services over the Internet - variety of implementations, interoperable solutions (open systems, open architectures) -...with Europe always at the frontline of technology development, use World scale collaborations, access to “infinite” information power, new ways to share and create knowledge to be new key facilities

Some important FP6 priorities Create RTD-efforts to reach high level and ambitious objectives - mobilize National, private funds From prototype to production level systems (industrial quality); promote commercial uptake of technology Research on new concepts (Semantic Grids, Grids and the Web, Mobile Grids, Ambient Intelligence Spaces) Strengthen middle-ware developments in Europe (Academia-Industry collaboration, skills) Involve new User/Application communities Close ties with National efforts (National Grid Centres?) Strengthen International role of Europe - impact standards
