WELCOME TO EARTH SCIENCE MRS. E. GONZALZLES 1 ST PERIOD, 2 ND PERIOD AND 3 RD PERIOD

The Scope of EARTH SCIENCE The 5 areas of study: Astronomy Geology Meteorology Oceanography Environmental science

EARTH SCIENCE IS PART OF YOUR EVERYDAY LIFE From the maps used when traveling. Weather reports used each day. Observing soils in different places vary in color and texture. Gazing at objects in the night sky. Earth science is broad and divided into 5 areas of study.

Review the vocabulary Technology- Scientific method SI units: length, mass, volume, weight Independent variable Dependent variable Control Constant variables

Earth’s Systems: 4 main systems Geosphere: Atmosphere: Hydrosphere: Biosphere:

Summarize Summarize the components and composition of each of Earth’s 4 major systems in a data table. Include illustrations and photographs.

Methods of scientists Nature of scientific investigations- Would it be more energy-efficient to paint a house a dark or light? How should a scientist go about finding the answer to this question? TV ads make claims about products such as soaps, or paper products. How might you test the claims?

Experimentation –Scientific Method List the steps for the scientific method Measurement-SI units Length-millimeter, centimeter, meter, kilo Mass: milligram, grams, kilogram Volume: liter Temperature-Celsius and Kelvin Weight: Newton Density: Mass/Volume

Measurement Time: second Area (L x W) and volume Are the terms mass and weight synonymous?

Communication in Science Lab reports- Communicating the results- Are the terms hypothesis and theory the synonymous? Graphs: line, bar, histograms Models Scientific law

Bell Ringer: 1. Identify the 5 areas of study in Earth Science. 2. Name the four main systems in Earth Science
