Year 5 General Information WELCOME BACK! Welcome back to school - I hope you had a lovely summer holiday! This year there is lots of enjoyable learning opportunities to look forward to but if you have any questions or would like to discuss anything, please come and let us know. Miss Powell and Miss Jenkins PE lessons are on Thursdays. Please ensure your child has a labelled PE kit in school. Year 5 will be swimming in November. Reading diaries need to be signed at home each week. Library books are changed every Monday. Year 5 Autumn Curriculum Information Prehistoric Britain Helpful Home Activities Help your child improve their reading by spending ten minutes reading and talking about books together each night. Use the questions in the reading diaries to help with question ideas. Support your child in practicing multiplication and division facts. Your child has a Mathletics account they can use online at any time. You could research the topic this half term by looking at Prehistoric Britain and the changes which occurred during this period.

Literacy In the first 4 weeks of this term we have been studying Jamaica. In Literacy we have learnt about the poems of Benjamin Zephaniah and the stories about Anansi the spider. We will be finishing the term looking at persuasive and descriptive writing. Numeracy This half term we will be looking at using all 4 operations both mentally and with efficient written methods. We will also be exploring the properties of numbers such as prime numbers. Finally we will be learning to identify, draw and measure different types of angles and how to measure and calculate length, perimeter and area. Geography In the first 4 weeks of this term we have been studying Jamaica. We have looked at the location of Jamaica in relation to the UK and the rest of the Caribbean islands. We have researched the climate, landscape, traditions and culture. Art During our time studying Jamaica we have looked at the colours of the Jamaican flag and used these to create alternative pictures of Usain Bolt, palms trees and a map of Jamaica. We have also looked at the costumes worn during carnival and created our own masks. Science This half term we are exploring the properties of different materials including their hardness, solubility, transparency, conductivity (electrical and thermal), and response to magnets. We will investigate factors which affect dissolving and how to separate mixtures of materials. Finally, we will investigate the differences between reversible and irreversible changes. Social and Emotional During circle time and PSHE lessons, we will be looking at new beginnings. As part of this we will consider how to create enjoyable and considerate relationships with others. Physical Education PE this half term will focus on dance and invasion games. We will be going swimming every day for 2 weeks in November. A separate letter about this will be sent to you closer to the date. Religious Education This half term we will be visiting Shireland Road mosque as part of our topic on the life of Muhammad and his importance to Muslims. Y5 Autumn Term Prehistoric Britain History This half term we will be looking at the main changes that took place from the Stone Age through the Bronze Age into the Iron Age. We will study the changes in housing, farming, religion, art and culture.
