© 2015 albert-learning.com Iran’s Nuclear Program  The nuclear program of Iran was launched in the 1950s with the help of the United States as part of the Atoms for Peace program.  The participation of the United States and Western European governments in Iran's nuclear program continued until the 1979 Iranian Revolution.  Iran has signed treaties repudiating the possession of weapons of mass destruction including the Biological Weapons Convention, the Chemical Weapons Convention, and the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).  Iran's nuclear program has included several research sites, two uranium mines, a research reactor, and uranium processing facilities that include three known uranium enrichment plants.  Iran's first nuclear power plant, Bushehr I reactor was completed with major assistance of Russian government agency Rosatom.

© 2015 albert-learning.com Iran’s Nuclear Program  Iran has announced that it is working on a new 360 MW nuclear power plant to be located in Darkhovin.  Iran has also indicated that it will seek more medium-sized nuclear power plants and uranium mines in the future.  In 2012, U.S. intelligence agencies reported that Iran was pursuing research that could enable it to produce nuclear weapons.

© 2015 albert-learning.com Iran’s Nuclear Program Ahmadinejad defends Iran's nuclear programme  Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said his country has "a right" to the enrichment of uranium to 20 percent.  But he insisted that it was not a step toward producing a bomb.  Ahmadinejad’s remarks came as long-stalled negotiations between Tehran and six world powers on Iran’s nuclear program have been recently revived, with the countries agreeing to talks in Moscow in June after discussions last week in Baghdad  While Ahmadinejad maintained that Iran has a right to 20 percent uranium enrichment, he also hinted that Iran could be open to stopping the 20 percent enrichment if world powers offered significant concessions
