Responding with text evidence means…. Strengthening your supporting paragraphs with proof from the text and convincing your reader that your thesis is reasonable -Supporting ideas Reasons/Evidence Body Thesis: ONE IDEA

What does evidence from the text look like? Quotes from the text Specific examples or facts from what you read Interpreting what you read (Explaining how what your quote or specific example proves your point) A Long Way Gone

We’re making inferences Inference = story clue + what I know Definition: Making a conclusion based on an idea that is clearly suggested or implied by a writer

Properly using text evidence 1) State your point 2) State the evidence from the text 3) Explain how the evidence helps make your point (inference)

Properly using text evidence I think that what will happen to Ishmael is that he will keep wandering from village to village but eventually become a child soldier. This is most likely going to happen because as he says in chapter six, “Some had heard rumors about young boys being forced by rebels to kill their families and maiming civilians. This was one of the consequences of civil war. People stopped trusting each other” (37). _____ _______________________________________

So, it seemed child soldiers were becoming more and more common. It’s only a matter of time before rebels will see that Ishmael is vulnerable and without his family. Eventually, war will steal Ishmael’s goodness and ability to trust others as well.

Why use evidence from the text? Helps explain what you mean Makes your opinion more convincing
