Thermo Scientific has “Gone Green” 2014 MSU Greening the Supply Chain New technologies and processes to reduce the overall energy usage, during manufacturing and use of our Thermo Lab Equipment, ULT’s, BSC’s, Cold Storage

We continue to benchmark our progress on energy and emissions through annual participation in the Carbon Disclosure Project. A great example of operational excellence is our Thermo Scientific site in Asheville, North Carolina, which has reduced landfill waste by 50 percent and is on track to achieve Zero Waste Certification in The facility was honored twice in 2013 for excellence and efficiency in business operations and sustainability— including winning the Industry Week award for being one of the best plants in the U.S. Commitment to continuously improve operations and processes

This year, we recently completed our acquisition of Life Technologies, which has a strong history of sustainable performance, including: Achieving Zero Waste certification at 7 major sites Lowering carbon dioxide emissions by 30% through clean-energy fuel cell systems Saving 60,000 polystyrene coolers annually by converting qualified products from cold to ambient shipping. Achieving Zero Waste

Choosing the Right Ultra Low Temperature Freezer Ultra low temperature freezers (ULT’s) are used in most research laboratories to store blood, drugs, enzymes, viruses, bacteria, cell preparations, chemicals, DNA, and biological samples. In order to maintain safe storage at temperatures as low as -86C, these freezers utilize a sophisticated dual compressor refrigeration system. In the past, little to no attention was paid to how much energy these ULT’s used with the focus being on performance. A ULT can actually use as much energy as a small home over the course of a year. The recent focus on sustainability has shined a bright light on the energy usage of high energy use laboratory equipment like ULT’s. With that in mind, suppliers of these units have recently focused on ways to reduce overall energy consumption while still maintaining the safety and performance required for protecting precious samples.

How is World Class Efficiency Achieved? 3. World Class Refrigeration System Efficiently moves heat from inside the cabinet to the ambient space. Powerful! With plenty of reserve cooling capacity for a very low DOR. Reduces the amount of heat put into the lab which must be removed by the HVAC system. 3. 6 Ability to Choose Energy Modes Choose from High Performance and Energy Savings Modes High Performance – For those customers needing ultra tight temperature tolerance this mode provides optimum temperature uniformity within the cabinet Energy Savings – Saves an average of 15% in energy*. * Compared to high-performance mode.

Energy & Capacity – Older Platforms vs New Technology 25% increased storage capacity! 20% energy reduction! 6% to 12% less footprint! * Internal performance data. March, New 100 Vial Boxes Old 100 Vial Boxes New Energy Old Energy

Overall Energy Costs and Carbon Footprint* Energy Usage for 1 ULT 20 Kwh / Day $905 / Year Energy Usage for 1 ULT 20 Kwh / Day $905 / Year Total annual energy cost for 1 ULT ~ $1,267 Compare New technology to older technology over a 10 year period. New saves $7,396 New saves 301 metric tons of CO 2 The CO 2 savings above for one UxF unit is equivalent to the CO 2 output of 5.8 automobiles over 10 years !!! Or… The equivalent CO 2 output of 5 typical homes in the USA. Average electricity cost = $0.125 / KwH Old tech energy usage ~ 27.4 KwH / Day New tech energy usage ~ 17KwH / Day HVAC Energy Usage for 1 ULT 8 Kwh / Day $362 / Year HVAC Energy Usage for 1 ULT 8 Kwh / Day $362 / Year 52 metric tons CO2 annually Total CO2 output from the system below is 52 MT * Internal performance data. March, 2012.

Why Replace My Old ULT, It’s Working Just Fine? Typically older ULT’s are running 100% of the time due to aging and worn out parts. Over 10 years, 10 new units can save $83,000 The new system design can yield 43% savings versus older ULT designs Over 10 years the new design will save 770,000 pounds of CO 2 emission into the atmosphere The CO 2 savings is equivalent to 6.7 cars over a 10-year period Energy Costs for 10 ULT’s over 10 years Old ULT Energy Assumption: 30 Kwh/day to operate & 12 Kwh/day for HVAC load costs. New ULT Assumption: 17 Kwh/day to operate & 6.8 Kwh/day for HVAC load costs. Average cost per Kwh = $0.125 / Kwh. New Lifecycle Benefits Replace your old ULT’s – Save money & Protect the environment New ULT $

Water Cooled Option Up to 17% energy reduction* Reduce heat output into the room by more than 70%* * based on internal test data. July, For Internal Use Only

Power Consumption Data – High Performance Mode 11% 6% 17% 14 % 7% Save up to 17% in Energy with Water Cooled Option* For Internal Use Only * based on internal test data. July, 2012.

Heat Rejection Reduction – Energy Savings Mode SIGNIFICANT IMPACT on HVAC SYSTEMS Water removes heat greatly reducing the amount of heat generated into the room reducing the need for cooling* For Internal Use Only * based on internal test data. July, 2012.

Sustainability – Our Operations Moving Forward (CSR) Corporate Social Responsibility, related data – energy usage, waste, recycling, water- reporting Environmental initiatives are driven at the site level Recycled more than 8,300 metric tons of waste Installed solar panels at facility to save 75% on energy bills Refill – Not landfill program – reducing use of disposable water bottles
