Pack Life Pack- -a social group of wolves that consists of the adult parents and their offspring of around 2-3 years of age The adult wolves are usually unrelated Sometimes, other non-related wolves will join the pack.

Pack Life The average pack consists of 5-11 wolves: 1-2 adults 3-6 younger wolves 1-3 puppies

“My dad is the alpha wolf in my pack.” Pack Life The leader of the pack is called the “Alpha Wolf” He uses physical force to enforce dominance within the pack. There are usually two alphas in the pack, the male and female. The second in commands are called the “Beta Wolves” “My dad is the alpha wolf in my pack.”

“My mommy and daddy have been together for a long time.” Pack Life Wolves keep the same partner for the rest of their lives. Female wolves usually start having puppies when they are 2 years old. - They will have around 1 litter of puppies per year. “My mommy and daddy have been together for a long time.”

Pack Life Territory Each pack has its own territory. lives, hunts, and breeds there territories could range from 100 sq. miles to 1,000 sq. miles or more dependent on these factors prey abundance, nature of the terrain, climate, and presence of other predators and competitors

“I am a puppy. I was born in a den outside of my packs territory.” Wolf Pups Baby wolves are called puppies. When mommy wolves are ready to have their pups, they will go to a place that is outside of their pack’s territory. “I am a puppy. I was born in a den outside of my packs territory.”

“I am 3 weeks old, so I am able to see and hear now.” Wolf Pups The average size of a litter is 5- 6 puppies. Puppies are born blind and deaf and are covered in short, grayish- brown fur. They gain their sight in around 10-13 days. “I am 3 weeks old, so I am able to see and hear now.”

Wolf Pups Pups are ready to leave the den at around the age of 3-4 weeks old. The whole pack will take turns caring and raising the puppies. Other females in the pack help feed the babies, also. Males compete to do the babysitting.

Wolf Pups The den that they live in could be a small cave or hole dug out of the ground. The den must be big enough for the mother and her puppies to fit in. “My mother’s den was a small cave and it fit my mother and 5 siblings.”

Wolf Pups Stages of Development 10-13 days: eyes open 3 weeks: milk teeth appear; start to explore den 4-5 weeks: short trips outside the den, begin to eat meat 6 weeks: moving up to a mile from the den without an adult wolf 6-8 weeks: puppies are weaned 12 weeks: begin to travel with pack on hunts with adult wolves 15-28 weeks: milk teeth are replaced 7-8 months: begin to hunt with pack
