4 Characteristics Coyotes are grayish-brown to yellowish- brown fur on top and whitish fur on its under parts. Its ears are triangles on the top of their head. It has a long, narrow muzzle, a black nose, yellow eyes and a bushy tail. Coyotes run with their tail straight out.

5 Life Cycle The coyotes mate between February and April. The female may mate with more than one male. Two months later the female gives birth to one through nineteen pups. They usually give birth to about six. They are born blind with floppy ears. Their eyes open in ten days. They come out of the den in to three to four weeks. Male pups will leave their mother when they are between six to nine months old. Female stay with mothers pack.

6 Behavior Coyotes make their dens in rocky crevices, logs, of other animals. They will find a abandon den of a badger and a fox and enlarge it. The coyote is a very vocal animal. It has a number of vocalizations including barks, growls, yips, whines and howls. It uses a long howl to let other members of the pack know where he is. It uses a short bark to warn danger. When a pack of coyotes is welcoming a member into the pack the coyotes yip. Other vocalizations including growling, whining, and whimpering when males and females are establishing bonds and high pitched barks to summon puppies.

7 Diet The Coyote does most of its hunting alone at night. It is a carnivore. Most of its diet is made up of mammals, but it also eats birds and snakes. Coyotes prefer to eat a fresh kill but it will eat carrion. In the fall and Winter the coyotes eat fruits, vegtables, and berries. When hunting small prey like mice the coyotes will stand still with its legs stiff and then pounce on its prey. When hunting larger preys like deer coyotes hunt in packs. One or more coyotes will chase the deer while others wait the next group will pick up the chase. Working in a group make it easier to kill.
