SCHOOL WIDE VOCABULARY DEVELOPMENT CAMPUS IMPROVEMENT PLAN I Heidi Nolan EDUC 6331, KKL

ABSTRACT The goal of the school-wide vocabulary development plan is to: Increase everyday and academic vocabulary across all grade levels and among all students Show yearly reading progress for ESL students. Close the achievement gap between low performing students and their peers.

EVIDENCE OF NEED In order to improve Greenwood Forest students’ scores in all subjects, reading levels, fluency, and deficiency in Tier I and Tier II, vocabulary must be addressed. Reading levels and fluency scores, as evidenced by yearly reading benchmarks, are well below grade-level. Assessments and anecdotal observations by teachers of vocabulary deficiencies provide clear evidence of a continued and intensified need for immediate intervention, and a school-wide, common reading focus as we begin the school year. VOCABULARY GAMES Students will be exposed to games designed to build everyday and academic vocabulary. Teachers will be provided resources from which to choose games that will be adaptable across content area.

JOURNAL ENTRIES Students will write daily journal entries across various content areas using a word bank of key vocabulary words for academic vocabulary development. Word banks will be teacher created, or from a purchased source that is aligned with state standards for content areas. Word banks will be grade and developmentally appropriate.

INTERACTIVE BULLETIN BOARDS Teachers, Counselor, and Instructional Specialists will create interactive bulletin boards designed for everyday and academic vocabulary. Bulletin boards will be designed to appeal to various grade levels.

WORD OF THE WEEK Administration, Counselor, and Instructional Specialists will develop a list of words designed to build everyday and academic vocabulary. Words will be announced on Monday during the morning announcements. Teachers will display the words in their classrooms, and do a short activity using the word. Activities may range from writing a definition, creating an illustration, or acting the word out in a brief skit.
