Emily Bronte 1818-1848 In 1818, Emily Bronte was born in Yorkshire, England to Patrick Bronte and Maria Branwell. She is the fifth of six children and perhaps the greatest writer of the three Brontë sisters – Charlotte Emily and Anne. Emily Brontë published only one novel, Wuthering Heights in (1847). Emily Brontë died of tuberculosis in the late 1848. She had caught cold at her brother Branwell's funeral in September. After the appearance of Wuthering Heighs, some skeptics maintained that the book was written by Branwell, on the grounds that no woman from such circumscribed life, could have written such passionate story. http://www.google.ca/imgres?q=wuthering+heightsWuthering Heights Time Line This is an oil painting of Emily Bronte (1818-1848), author of Wuthering Heights, published in 1847. Wuthering Heights Synopsis Wuthering Heights, a novel of immense power and strength, is a duel love story involving two neighboring families, which spans two generations. This passionate narrative of revenge centers on the doomed love between Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff, and how this unresolved passion eventually destroys them and many around them.

Setting- The Moors All of the action in Wuthering Heights takes place on the Yorkshire moors, in England, in or around the two neighboring houses of Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange. The raw beauty of the rocky moors symbolizes the wildness of the characters, particularly the character of Heathcliff.

Wuthering Heights Themes Revenge Romantic Love There are several themes in the novel: revenge, romantic love, social class and the super matural. When Heathcliff cannot have the woman he loves, he turns his attention to revenging his childhood tormenter, his adoptive brother Hindley. Because Hindley never lost an opportunity to demean Heathcliff, the "gypsy" grows up determined to destroy Hindley and become master of the two houses. The fact that Hindley already has a tendency to drink and gamble to excess makes Heathcliff's vengeance all the easier. Without this desire for revenge, Heathcliff would have had nothing to do but pine after Catherine, so revenge becomes a major motivator for his character. Romantic Love - There are many forms of Romantic Love in Wuthering Heights: the great passion between Heathcliff and Catherine, the romantic infatuation of Isabella for Heathcliff, the puppy love between Cathy and Linton, and the sexual attraction of Cathy and Hareton. It is the passion of Heathcliff and Catherine to which most readers respond and remember and that has made this novel one of the great love of English literature. Social Class Supernatural
