The first accidental death was reported on the Southern Expressway few weeks ago, when a car skidded off the road killing a 26 year old youth, Police said. The vehicle had skidded off the track at the 21st Post on the expressway and police suspect it would have been driven at excess speed violating the speed limits stipulated on the expressway. -Ada darana-

Main Objective The main objective of this project is to develop a system that will help to improve the efficiency of the Sri Lankan highway Emergency service unit by providing a rapid accident location identification system with a minimum cost.

Other Objectives Identifying the technologies used in Sri Lankan Southern Expressway to identify the location of an accident. Identifying the similar technologies used in other counties to identify the location of an accident. Identify the vehicles uniquely in case of an accident. Identify the location of the accident correctly for rapid Emergency services. Identify methods to mitigate the no of accidents. Identify methods to Calculate speed of the vehicle at each road device range.

Accident Identification

Exit Point

Research Work An analysis is always important before implementing a system. Analysis of the external factors affecting the system is a must to ensure and predict the systems outcome and its effect on the users. Brainstorming Questionnaire Interviews with highway administrators and highway & RDA together with prototype Literature

Existing Similar Systems

ENTRANCE

A small device will be given to the driver at each entrance points and collect when that vehicle exit from the highway. Every vehicle will be identify using an unique vehicle identity number(VID). There will be a PC in each entrance point and that PC is integrated with a special user interface.

Vehicle device Small and user-friendly device. Rechargeable power source. Ability to interact with a bar code reader. Integrated with Xbee RF modules.

Officer at the entrance will use that user interface to enter the unique VID for each vehicle prior to give driver a ticket. Drivers name and vehicle number(JK- XXXX) will also enter to that interface. A bar code reader which connected to the PC will be used to interact with the vehicle device.

Vehicle device is got the capability to transmit a signal in every 5 seconds and that signal will be received by the devices installed in the highway. When a vehicle goes beyond 100kmph, the vehicle device will generate an ‘alarm beep’. Main server will also updated about that particular drivers unlawful speed. 120kmph “Beep” will be generated
