Birth Control History  Birth control, or contraception, is taking action to purposely reduce the possibility of pregnancy. Birth control is commonly used as part of family planning.  Birth control studies were brought on by a discovery of a connection between the coitus and pregnancy. Ancient Egyptians have recorded different birth control methods. A multitude of herbs were consumed that were thought to destroy potential pregnancies.  Different birth control methods carry different characteristics. Methods of Birth Control  PATCH: The birth control patch is a small, thin, square patch that has adhesives that stick to the skin. It prevents pregnancy by putting different hormones into the bloodstream. By controlling these hormones you are controlling certain functions of pregnancy. The hormones progesterone and estrogen in the patch prevents ovulation. Without the egg, pregnancy is impossible because male sperm cannot find a partner.

Methods of Birth Control  SHOT: The birth control shot is another method of controlling the progesterone hormone. The shot is applied to arm and buttocks every 3 months to protect a girl from becoming pregnant. By controlling progesterone, the shot is temporarily stopping ovulation. Without an egg for the sperm to match with, pregnancy becomes impossible.

Methods of Birth Control  The Birth Control Pill: more commonly referred to as “the pill” is another method of birth control. It also changes hormone levels that directly control the ovaries and uterus. Preventing ovulation directly prevents most pregnancies.
