What are the Transformative Changes Required to Deal with the Healthcare of the Future? n History of the Future Exercise n What Will You Wish You Had Done in 2011 Looking Back Ten Years From Now

Welcome to the Celebration n It is January 24, 2021 n Your hospital system had prepared for the initiatives of the future back in 2011 n As a physician/board/administrative leader you have acquired the skill sets for an optimistic future n What were the initiatives you were most prepared for and what’s changed the most since d???d???d???d???

History of the Future Approach n Anchor 2020 as a time horizon in your life ä Personal milestones between ä Family members n Give each participant time to think about elements of their own “back to the future” ä Recognizing non incremental nature of changes ä Be creative n Set the stage by inviting the group to describe the physical setting and mentally travel to a future time and place ä Must use the past tense ä When asked a question—make up a specific answer n Build on statements like improv theater n React spontaneously in collaborative way

The Not So Optimistic Past and Present I’m for leaving the status quo like it is... Yogi Berra We are at a crossroads…one road leads to total destruction, the other despair… let’s hope we choose the right one... Woody Allen

What can we learn from the future that will help us create a better present for healthcare? A History of the Future Approach

Physicians View of the Future View From the Present n 70 % felt “we were doomed” and that “there was nothing to do but wait for the apocalypse” Of the 30% that felt there was an optimistic future only 18% felt that they (physicians) would find the answers Of the 30% that felt there was an optimistic future only 18% felt that they (physicians) would find the answers

Scenario 1 - The Bleak Scenario n It is now 2020 n Physicians have lost control of the system n Medical care is now run by large insurance companies and non-medical professionals n Physicians are a commodity and are hired by these mega corporations What Happened???

Scenario 2 - The Optimistic Scenario n It is now 2020 n Physicians have regained control of the system n There is alignment of incentives between good health care and reimbursement n Physician groups have become entrepreneurial with growing success and more fun What Happened???

Did I Really Say That? Docs Were Often Surprised by Their Creative Responses n Acceptance of integrative health n Product line approaches n Innovative customer service models n “Coopetition” models n Importance of leveraging quality, service and technology

Top Initiatives of Hospitals Preparing For the Future n Service Lines on Steroids ä Providers Available Across Specialties ä Centers of Excellence Without Walls n Preparation for the new wave of technologies n Improvements in Customer Service ä Recognition of Different Competitors n “Coopetition” models with other entities and with the medical staff n Incorporation of “integrative” or “global” health n Transforming the Hospital-Medical Staff Relationship
