Relevance Meaningful Significant Worthwhile Applicable

Sharing and collaboration Increase in engagement when there is opportunity to work with peers Collaboration within tasks is deemed to be positive; increased learning opportunities Sharing and collaboration used appropriately by teacher

Environmental factors Geography of the classroom room - desks, chairs, lighting, views Resource-rich, stimulating surroundings Computers Disruption and negativity minimised Home vs classroom

Supportive context Engagement influenced by student perception of teacher-warmth and interest shown in student work Students more positive when environment is positive - when negativity and disruptiveness minimised Engagement enhanced in positive and rich learning environments There is an increase in perceived success when students believe that knowledge and skills have made a positive difference

Self-belief Engaging environments encourage self-belief Notion of self-empowerment, independence Potential benefits of self-belief - can-do attitudes

Interest Novelty/originality of approach, texts, tasks Engaging content Challenging Enjoyable/fun Stimulating

Choice and control (where possible) Negotiation about topics, tasks, deadlines, task expectations Elements of student control embedded in activities Students are more likely to find activities realistic and meaningful rather than arbitrary and external, when they have a degree of control.

Contextualisation Contextualisation involves focusing learning within a context that has relevance to the students. When activities are learner-centred and focused around meaningful activities deemed relevant and worthwhile by the learner, there have been significant and measurable increases in student engagement (participation) and improvement in learning outcomes.
