It was easy to defend. 4 reasons they chose a Jamestown… The water was deep enough for ships to dock. They thought they had a good supply of fresh water. The river provided food and a pathway for exploration.

Also in 1619… Dutch ships brought Africans to the colonies for the 1 st time. Not brought as slaves. Most were indentured servants- would work for 5 to 7 years and then get their own land.
