What is the Achievement Gap?  When children enter kindergarten, there are already significant differences in literacy and math skills between children of low, middle and high socio-economic status (SES).  On average, children from low-income families show much less developed skills in the main areas necessary for success in kindergarten and beyond.

Creating the Urgency In addition to having families sign the Parent Involvement Contract we explain to families WHY their partnership is so critical to promoting positive student outcomes Understanding the research of the Achievement Gap creates a sense of urgency for families and motivates them to engage as partners in our HS/EHS programs.

Four family practices to help close the achievement gap 1. Family Routines: Establish consistent family routines that help your child learn to regulate his/her behavior. 2. Positive Discipline: Re-direct children by explaining what you would like him or her TO DO and why it is important instead of simply saying what NOT to do. © 2012Acelero, Inc. All Rights Reserved. What Can YOU do? Four family practices that help kids learn! 3. Provide language-rich experiences: Parents will talk to your children and expose them to new and different experiences. 4. Literacy: Cultivate a love of reading & literacy among your children and family
