Can Precision Agriculture Reduce Non Point Source Pollution? Oklahoma State University, Department of Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Ron Tejral

Review What is Non Point Source Pollution? Non Point indicates that the source is not from a point or small area, but is diffuse or spread over a large region.

Examples Urban: Runoff from parking lots, streets, lawns. Contains nutrients, sediment, petroleum, heavy metals, salts. Agriculture: Runoff from fields and animal confinement. Contains sediment, nutrients, pesticides, pathogens.

Causes of Water Impairment 1.Sediments 2.Pathogens 3.Nutrients (According to U.S. Geological Survey)

Primary Livestock Nitrogen Inputs

Nitrogen Animal Waste Production ,950 *Nitrogen as Animal Waste (ton/yr) * Cattle on pasture not considered

Crop Production Area < Acres x 10 -3

Nitrogen Fertilizer Sales N Fertilizer (ton/yr)

Crop Nutrient Balance (Commercial Fertilizer Input - Crop Production) Crop Nutrient Net Input P < 0 N & P > 0 N & P < 0

Area Weighted Surplus Nitrogen Surplus N (lb/yr/ac crop+pasture+hay) < > 50

Nitrogen Surplus (ton/yr) < > 5000

What Can Precision Ag NOT do? Increase use of best management practices. Make shipment of animal wastes more economically feasible. Change geology, topography.

How Is Precision Ag Helping Today? Reduction in total amount of nutrients, pesticides applied. Increase in efficiency.

How Can Precision Ag Help in the Future? Continued reduction in inputs. Continued increase in efficiency. Decreased pressure to use all available area.
