The role of the Veterinary Services in food safety  Ch 6.2.Control of biological hazards of animal health and public health importance through ante- and post- mortem meat inspection  Ch 6.3.The control of hazards of animal health and public health importance in animal feed  Ch 6.4.Biosecurity procedures in poultry production  Ch 6.5.Prevention, detection and control of Salmonella in poultry  Ch 6.6. – Recommendations for controlling antimicrobial resistance

Recent work in APFS: Terrestrial Code Salmonellosis in poultry Chapters revised to include measures at the animal/farm level to protect human and animal health  Ch Prevention, detection and control of Salmonella in poultry (adopted in 2009)  recommendations relevant to the control of all Salmonella in poultry with special attention to S. Enteritidis and S. Typhimurium  Ch Biosecurity procedures in poultry production (adopted in 2011)  general recommendations for control of infectious agents in poultry that affect animal and/or human health.

Recent work in APFS: Terrestrial Code Zoonotic parasites - OIE listed zoonotic parasites Chapters revised to include measures that can be applied at the animal/farm level to protect human and animal health  Ch 8.4. Infection with Echinococcus granulosus (adopted in 2013)  Ch 8.5. Infection with E. multilocularis (adopted in 2013)  Ch Infection with Trichinella spp. (adopted in 2013) chapter developed in close collaboration with Codex

Terrestrial Code APFS chapters Under development  Revision of Brucellosis chapters  New chapter on Porcine cysticercosis Future work  Salmonella in pigs and cattle (link to proposed Codex work on Salmonella in beef and pork).

How does OIE decide what pathogens to develop standards for? OIE listed diseases  i.e. that meet the criteria for inclusion on the OIE list (Chapter 1.2) e.g. Brucellosis, E.granulsosus, Trichinella, Porcine cysticercosis OR Pathogens important to Codex  e.g. Salmonella spp. in poultry, Salmonella in beef and pork

What you can do to participate in these standard developments?  Review future Reports of the Terrestrial Code Commission for any work relevant for APFS, e.g. proposed chapters on Brucellosis and Salmonella in pigs and cattle  Next Report due out in March  NOTE: FPs should also communicate with Codex Contact Points in food safety in your country to coordinate standard setting activities of OIE and Codex at the national level, e.g. Salmonella work.
