1 Trade in Live Animals and relevance to OIE Standards
14 to 15 March, 2017 Dr. Alejandro Thiermann Former President, Terrestrial Animal Health Code Commission

2 If your country is applying stricter import requirements than those recommended in the OIE sanitary standards, how can you defend this stricter position when challenged by an exporter?

3 If an exporting country is claiming a higher sanitary standard than you think, for example FMD freedom. How can you defend and justify stricter measures or import requirements?

4 There is an impasse in a trade negotiation, but you are interested in solving the problem. You want to preserve a good relationship with your trading partner, while also defending the position of your Minister and your private sector. What can you do?

5 You learn that a certain country in your region is importing animals in poor health condition, or carrying disease not present in your country. You worry that some of these animals could eventually be brought into your country and affect your national health status. Most, if not all countries in your region depend on best possible health status in order to trade within the region. What do you see as a solution? How can you take advantage of OIE standards and OIE assistance?

6 The countries in your region are primarily importers of live animals and if they trade, they only trade within the region. A large percentage of your live animal imports are seasonal and associated with religious and cultural events. How can you manage this in a way that you preserve the health status of your region, and ensure that exporters don’t take advantage of this unique situation by selling at higher prices, or exporting sick animals, not accepted by other countries?
