A species that is introduced into an area where it does not occur naturally; non-native species. Definition: HUMAN IMPACTS: Exotic Species

Cause As humans spread and travel across the globe, invaders hitched rides. Many were introduced on purpose

Exotic Species Cause Zebra mussels hitch rides on the undersides of boats and have spread to most eastern waterways Distribution of zebra mussels

Exotic Species Cause In 1880, a William Shakespeare fanatic tried to introduce all of the birds from his plays into Central Park. The European starling is now a nuisance species.

Exotic Species Effects Exotic species take over the niche and habitat of native species and often grow in monoculture. Example-Purple loosestrife takes over the niche of native cattails, yet does not provide the food, nesting material, or protection that cattails provide. Biodiversity declines

Exotic Species Effects Exotic species often disrupt food webs and directly damage native species because they lack natural enemies. There are no native predators nor genetic resistance to these pests in areas where they are introduced.

Exotic Species Effects Many local plants and animals are exotic species- Examples-Norway Maple, Water Chestnut, Buckthorn
