Definitions and history

Technology – Distance Education  Distance education can be defined as the delivery of instruction to students who are separated from their teacher by time and/or location.  DE is used to deliver instruction at places and times most convenient to learners. Defined

Technology – Distance Education  DE was originally developed to deliver instruction to remote, rural locations.  Started as Correspondence Courses delivered by way of the postal system.  Radio, television, and telephone were later added to enrich courses. History of DE Instruction

Technology – Distance Education  Course offerings in higher education  Supporting district-wide courses in virtual classrooms  Providing instruction to homebound students How DE Instruction has impacted education

Technology – Distance Education  Interaction through s, conferences and chats  Offering live and recorded streaming audio and video to courses  Including multimedia to courses. How the PC and the Internet have advanced DE Instruction

Alternative Delivery Systems

Technology – Distance Education Synchronous vs. Asynchronous Technologies  Synchronous distance education is instruction that occurs at the same time.  Asynchronous learning occurs at times when the instructor is not personally present. It is time shifted.
