American Nuclear Society Human Factors, Instrumentation, and Controls Division Presentation to the ANS Board of Directors David E. Holcomb June 2009, Atlanta, Georgia

HFICD Mission 1.Provide a forum for the exchange of technical information for practitioners within the field 2.Provide mechanisms for training and education for individuals entering the field or practitioners improving their skills 3.Serve as an advocated for advancing HFICD technology and/or practice within the nuclear arena 4.Serve as a point-of-access for external inquiries into nuclear HFICD technology and/or practices

HFICD Scope The focus of the HFICD is on the information and human-system interface aspects of nuclear systems. This includes the sensors that transduce physical processes into signals, the data processing and communications systems, the information display, and the perception and interpretation of information by humans. Both operational status and system health are extracted from measured signals. The interaction humans with automation and their decision processes are particular foci of the division.

Division Governance Officers Chair - David Holcomb Vice chair - Tim Hurst Incoming vice chair - Richard Wood Immediate past chair - John O’Hara Secretary/Treasurer - Andrew Lang - also YGN representative Executive Committee Members Ted Quinn Sergey Anikanov David Desaulniers Ty Tonkinson Sarah Schwartz - student representative

Division Membership Trends Note - name and scope change in 2008 decreases predictive value of prior years

Current Financial Status Final accounting for NPIC&HMIT 2009 still not received. Intent is to sponsor new HFIC scholarship with meeting and existing funds

Division Initiatives New award for HFICD achievement –Don W. Miller award New scholarship –Depending on availability of funding Support of young members congress –Career path overview session

Division Planning & Communications Request for bids for next NPIC&HMIT meeting released Updated communications effort in progress –Updated website responsibility necessary –Division newsletter Division provides substantial contribution to roughly annual Nuclear News Instrumentation and Controls special section

Successful NPIC&HMIT Meeting Held 6th American Nuclear Society International Topical Meeting on Nuclear Plant Instrumentation, Controls, and Human-Machine Interface Technologies held in Knoxville, TN April 5-9, 2009 Broad international meeting support

Services to Membership Instrumentation and controls professional development workshops held annually –2008 Winter Meeting –NPIC&HMIT 2009 New human factors professional development workshop held at NPIC&HMIT New scholarship planned Don W. Miller HFICD achievement award presented for approval Student travel contribution to ANS national meetings Contribution to student annual meeting

National Meeting Participation Evolving With Mission Increase HFICD topics heavily tied to OPD 2008 Annual Meeting session entitled “Control Strategies in Next Generation Reactors” –Organized, chaired, and all papers authored by HFICD members - credited to OPD Two paper sessions, one panel at current meeting

Division Metrics

HFICD Summary Division mission increased substantially in 2008 Successful Class I topical held in early 2009 –Planning initiated for next meeting in series New scholarship planned New division award initiated Division communications require increased focus
