American Nuclear Society Isotopes and Radiation Division Presentation to the ANS Board of Directors Richard Lindstrom, Vice-Chair Kenan Ü nl ü, IRD Chair 27 June 2007, Boston

IRD Mission (1) Develop the uses of I&R in scientific R&D and in industrial processes; (2) Promote the advancement of knowledge of nuclear phenomena and techniques; (3) Stimulate techniques, materials, equipment, and facilities that use I&R in research through the collaboration of industrial, governmental, medical, and educational institutions.

IRD Governance Chair (1 yr. term) Vice-chair (1 yr. term) Secretary (2 yr. term) Treasurer (1 yr. term) Exec. Comm. (6-12 members, staggered 3 yr. terms) currently 12 members BOD Liaison (F. Mark Reinhart)

Participation with Other Professional Societies National Organization of Test, Research, and Training Reactors (TRTR) - represents nearly 50 research reactors At least one session at each national meeting is devoted to research reactors and is sponsored or co-sponsored by IRD Institute of Nuclear Materials Management (INMM) – promotes best approaches and procedures for implementing all aspects of nuclear materials management Participation at Safeguards Topical Conference American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) IRD Chair is the ANS Liaison to AAAS Chemistry Division

Society Leadership Exec. Comm. has > 50% participation at national meetings (required for quorum) Lacking participation in PDC efforts Full participation in NPC efforts S. Lamont is Anaheim Program Chair

Non-Meeting Publications The IRD does not actively stimulate contributions to non-meeting publications, however, members contribute papers to numerous technical journals. Past IRD Chair contributed to the position paper PPS#30 on US Radioisotope Supply

Professional Development IRD has not supported any professional development workshops or activities Tentatively planning for Anaheim

Scholarships JAMES R. VOGT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Established in 1986 to recognize outstanding students at U.S. universities and colleges entering the field of radioanalytical chemistry and its applications. Students must be engaged in or proposing to undertake graduate or undergraduate research in radioanalytical chemistry or its applications. $2500 award, fully funded Co-sponsored by BMD

Peer Awards Radiation Science & Technology Award recognizes outstanding creative applications of radiation sciences and engineering principles $2000 award, currently funded at $37k Mishima Award recognizes outstanding contributions in research and development work on nuclear fuels and materials. IRD co-sponsors this award with the Materials Science and Technology Division

Student Support IRD has funded $500 for each student conference over the past several years Travel support at MARC-VII 2006

Followup In Albuquerque, President McFarlane asked BMD about the status of Ci and other non-SI units 1995 NIST Spec Pub 811 stated that curie, roentgen, rad, and rem are permitted "until the year 2000, the cessation date suggested by the Committee for Interagency Radiation Research and Policy Coordination or CIRRPC, a United States Government interagency group." The CIRRPC has disbanded Current Federal Register / Vol. 63, No. 144/ July 28, 1998 / Notices Status is unchanged; FedReg notice is due for review Status is unchanged; FedReg notice is due for review
