Presentation transcript:

Identify the PAF Write a leaflet for young people advising them on how to prepare for an exam Write a speech for local councillors persuading them to improve facilities for young people. Write an article for newspaper in which you argue about the importance of modern technology Write a letter to the headteacher informing them why you should be a prefect.

Learning Objective. To revise the importance of choice of vocabulary in a piece of writing. To revise techniques and ways of making writing more interesting. To revise topic sentences. Why is formality important?

Starter task: What’s wrong with this if it is a letter to the local council Firstly, I don’t mean to moan, but I would like to complain about the look of the park. It is bad. It is quite dirty; it has bad equipment and it isn’t very safe. Answer: It lacks sophistication in it’s language use and uses the wrong register.

Why do you need to think about the language you use? To interest the audience. To help make your AFOREST techniques more interesting. To make sure you are appropriate to your SPAF

Ways of making language more interesting Number 1 Synonyms Three minute task- come up with better alternatives for: Interesting Boring Great Challenge: Can you consider which words would be suitable for your different audiences.

Why is this piece of writing interesting? It made a star of Susan Boyle but at the Glasgow auditions for Britain's Got Talent it's a bear pit of humiliation and shattered dreams The temperature is just tickling freezing on a dark evening in Glasgow. However, those in the 3,000-strong queue I'm standing among outside the Clyde Auditorium are not dressed for the weather – they're dressed to impress. This is the first of the regional auditions for the fourth series of Britain's Got Talent, the televised talent show that's taken the country by storm and helped to make stars out of both professional bully Simon Cowell and Scottish singing sensation Susan Boyle.

Ways of Making Language more interesting Number 2 Make sense of this picture, write the correct words and definitions. Make sure you have something to say, and if you need help be prepared to ask.

AFOREST PRAM Using this in the correct way can make your writing more interesting for the reader- and therefore it might well boast your mark.

Paired Work Each pair is going to be given a small piece of writing to do. You only need to write a paragraph but…: You MUST choose interesting words You MUST write appropriately to your audience You MUST use appropriate techniques. Challenge: Experiment with sentence structures. Can you use a short one for impact?

Task 1: Write a paragraph for a website in which you review an awful restaurant or holiday. Describe and give your opinion. Task 2: Write a paragraph for an article on the brilliance of modern inventions. Argue for an invention you think is brilliant. Task 3: Write a paragraph for a speech persuading the head teacher as to why Year 11 should all get a free ticket to the prom.

Learning Objective. To revise the importance of choice of vocabulary in a piece of writing. To revise techniques and ways of making writing more interesting. To revise topic sentences. Where have we got to? What do we need to do?

Topic Sentences What is a topic sentence? A topic sentence is the opening sentence to your paragraph. It should engage the reader, give a good indication to the topic of the paragraph, and if possible reference the previous paragraph.

Look at the topic sentences below. Write down: What you think the rest of the paragraph was about. How it engages the reader. Does it make links to previous paragraphs in any way? At present, our community facilities are just not good enough. The first way we make a change for the better is to get a sense of community. No-one feels part of anything and we need to change this. Once we have the community group set up, we need to look at provision for young children- for example the play park.

Final Task Plan your answer to this question: Write down some engaging words you could use in each section. Write down phrases that use AFOREST. Come up with your topic sentences for each section.
