Literacy Ideas

Reading Reading Bingo: create personalised reading grids for students based on genre, author, period, mixed-bag etc. Create a reading wall: ‘caught reading’ - pictures of staff/ students reading in unusual places, extended abstract mind map of books read by class, a ‘mountain’ of all the books that the class have read Reading Challenge: pit one class against another Schol-Up Reading Room – furnish a room with comfy chairs and bean bags for reading Whole-school DEAR time one form time a week (Drop Everything and Read) Reading Journals Reading medals Book boxes Curriculum extra reading lists for all Schemes for Learning Encourage students to undertake extended abstract thinking connecting books that they have read

Vocabulary Personalised vocabulary lists Vocabulary bingo – students have word mats. They can cross off every word that they use in the lesson. This could be done over a series of lessons. This could also be done using question stems. Personalised vocabulary mats created by students Department word walls Word of the week Differentiated word mats Banned word lists e.g. ‘thing’ and ‘like’
