Building a High-Performing University Advancement Function.

University of Kentucky Foundations are specific to various initiatives as repositories – Research Foundation (grants, IP income, etc.) Chaired by President Exec. Director - Provost – Athletics Foundation (athletic specific funds administration) Chaired by Athletic Director Office of Development – coordinates all fundraising activities – Led by VP/Chief Development Officer Fundraising programs Annual giving Corp and Foundation Relations Major & Regional Gifts Prospect Development

Georgia Institute of Technology Foundation – manage gifts given in support of academic excellence in the spirit and traditions of GA Office of Development & Alumni – coordination of all fundraising activities Foundation Structure – Board of Trustees Ex-officio members (VP of Development, GA Tech VP’s, GA Tech Alumni President) Numerous committees

Ohio State University Foundation – primary gift receiving entity Office of University Development – attain private philanthropic funding from alumni, friends, corporations, and foundations. – organizes and coordinates all fundraising programs for the university Foundation Structure – Board of Directors (56 members) Led by Sr. Associate VP of Development – Staff Led by SVP of Development who reports to the President

Central Michigan University Development & Alumni Relations – coordinate all fundraising activities – Stewardship & Donor Relations – Proposal Development – Annual Giving – Planned & Major Gifts – Corporate & Foundation Relations – Athletics

Western Kentucky University Foundation – the official repository for gifts to the University & exists for the benefit of WKU – volunteer leadership, fund solicitation, gift acceptance & acknowledgement, asset management services & maintaining donor records Development & Alumni Relations – Coordination of all fundraising activities Foundation Structure – Board of Trustees Ex-Officio (BOG members, President) – Staff President – VP for Development & Alumni Relations

Morehead State University Foundation – administer all assets, promote educational purposes (encourage, sponsor & support institutional priorities), provide volunteer leadership to fundraising programs & assist other institutional advancement efforts Office of Advancement – Coordinate fundraising activities Foundation Structure – Board of Trustees Ex-Officio – President – Staff CEO – Vice President for Advancement

Summary Foundations typically serve as the repository, financial stewards and administrators of private gifts to the University Foundation Boards “give and cause to give” – Personally support and cultivate other supporters within their sphere of influence Development offices typically coordinate philanthropic/ fundraising activities for the University Development personnel are typically Foundation support personnel (University personnel)

The President is actively engaged in the direction of fundraising activities – Ex-officio member of the Foundation Board of Directors – VP of Development is a direct report Integration of BOG members onto the Foundation Board creates synergistic opportunities – Active involvement in giving and causing to give – More holistic view of operations

Recommendations for a Transformational Organization to Ensure a Successful Fundraising Campaign 11

12 Recommendation: Institutional Advancement Construct Five of the six major areas that will report to the Vice President for Institutional Advancement will be managed by current employees. The University Relations office will coordinate activities for the entire campus. Plans are for an additional position to be added for this area.
