Higher Physical Education Preparation of the Body

Learning Intentions I will understand how to structure my answers and explain the points I am making in detail I will revise my knowledge of Skill Related and Mental fitness

Writing an Answer in Higher PE Look at the handout on structuring and planning your answer. Highlight the key points...

Try these examples... As a central midfielder in Hockey, I needed CRE to last the whole game without getting tired, move from defence into attack, maintain focus throughout the game and maintain high quality of passing and tackling later in the game. REWRITE THIS ANSWER PROPERLY – ONE POINT PER SENTENCE AND EXPLAIN WHY EACH POINT IS IMPORTANT “As a central midfielder in Hockey, there are many key reasons why I need CRE for effective performance. CRE helps me carry out my role for the full 90 minutes of the game so it is vital as a midfielder. With good CRE, I will be able to support my strikers in attack, providing outlet passes to the wings, even in the latter stages in the game where I might be tired. With good CRE, I will also be able to track back in defence, helping out my defenders when the opposition are pressurising us, even in the latter stages of the game. CRE also helps me to stay focussed as the game goes on, still concentrating on my role and marking my opponent as without good CRE, I would be tired and lose focus later in the game. Finally, having good CRE allows me to maintain high accuracy in my passing and tackling later in the game, as I will be less likely to lose focus as I won’t be so tired”

Try these examples... As a spiker in Volleyball, I needed power to be able to jump high in spiking, jump high in blocking, hit the ball hard and serve the ball hard REWRITE THIS ANSWER PROPERLY – ONE POINT PER SENTENCE AND EXPLAIN WHY EACH POINT IS IMPORTANT “ As a spiker in Volleyball, power is an important aspect of physical fitness to allow for effective performance. Power is important in my jumping actions. When I jump to spike the ball, if I have good power in my legs, I will be able to jump a lot higher, enabling me to contact the ball above the opposition block and stopping them from blocking my spike. I also need power in my arm to bring it through fast and hard when contacting the ball so that I can hit the ball with pace, down into my opponents court, making it difficult for them to return and putting them under pressure. This is also true when serving – with good power in my arm, I can contact the ball hard and put my opponent under pressure from the beginning of the rally. Finally, power is important when blocking. With good power, I am able to jump higher and stop my opponent from scoring with a powerful spike into my team’s defence. ”

Try these examples... As a forward in Basketball, I needed speed to make runs into the key, create space, mark my opponent and get away from my opponent. REWRITE THIS ANSWER PROPERLY – ONE POINT PER SENTENCE AND EXPLAIN WHY EACH POINT IS IMPORTANT “ As a forward in Basketball, an aspect of physical fitness that is important for effective performance is Speed. While pushing forward into our attacking zone, I need speed to make quick runs in and out of the key in order to receive a pass from my team mate and create a scoring opportunity. I also need speed to get away from my marker when off the ball to create space to receive a pass from my team mates. Speed is also important to be able to keep up with my opponent, especially when playing man-to- man, so that the opponent I am responsible for is not able to create space for a pass. Finally, Speed is vital as a forward in Basketball when I am in possession of the ball so that I can get passed my opponent while dribbling the ball and he is unable to get the ball off me. ”

Skill Related Fitness Revision PHYSICAL FITNESS SKILL RELATED FITNESS MENTAL FITNESS = AGILITY = BALANCE = CO-ORDINATION = REACTION TIME Try to come up with a definition for each of these

AGILITY The ability to change direction or position of the body quickly, while under control BALANCE The ability to hold a position still CO-ORDINATION The ability link actions together smoothly and in the correct order REACTION TIME The time taken between receiving a stimulus and initiating a response

Skill Related Fitness Now, using your homework answer as a starter, in your notes, choose one aspect of skill related fitness that is vital in your chosen role and explain why. REMEMBER – try to make three points and explain why each is important. DON’T LIST!

Mental Fitness PHYSICAL FITNESS SKILL RELATED FITNESS MENTAL FITNESS = MANAGING EMOTIONS = FOCUS = CONFIDENCE

MANAGING EMOTIONS Being able to remain focussed/concentrating on your role even if you are losing. Keeping focussed when my team are winning. Not losing my temper when a decision goes against me. FOCUS Understanding and being able to carry out your role without being distracted by external factors. Being fully aware of what is going on around you. CONFIDENCE Having a positive frame of mind that will allow you to visualise what you want to do and feel postive about carrying it out

Mental Fitness Now, using your homework answer as a starter, in your notes, choose one aspect of mental fitness that is vital in your chosen role and explain why.

Collecting Data In Football, one of the important aspects of fitness is Cardio Respiratory Endurance. We need to collect information about how our own personal level of CRE impacts our whole performance. - This is us collecting INITIAL DATA - We use a TIMED OBSERVATION SCHEDULE

Timed Observation Schedule -Shows level of CRE deterioration throughout the game -Collected during a match when you are playing at a high level/under pressure -Collected by someone else who will watch the match and complete the chart -Can be MOVEMENT based or SKILL based

TIMED OBSERVATION SCHEDULE Movement0-15mins15-30mins30-45mins45-60mins60-75mins75-90mins Walking Jogging - 10m sprint + 10m sprint Running
