2015 Accelerated Level Reasons/Causes for Imperialism Lesson Date and Number Your Papers: Tuesday, January 13, 2015 Block Day: Wednesday, January 14 or Thursday, January 15, 2015 Tuesday, January 20, 2015 Wednesday, January 21, 2015

Day One: Tuesday, January 13, 2015 Quiet Question: Type Two Prompt---As part of the oral tradition and history as told by the griots in Africa, proverbs are an important tool. Proverbs are concise sayings that are used to convey the values of a culture. Proverbs used symbolism or language from one aspect of life to give advice that can be applied more generally. For example, a stich in time saves nine applies not just to people who are mending clothing but to how all people should approach their work conscientiously. Most of the proverbs below come from the Mongo Tribe of the inner Congo Basis, but some come from other tribes. Select TWO proverbs from the list. Highlight the chosen two. For each proverb, you will do the following: Explain what it means---what is the advice in teenage language? Examine how the proverb connects to specific aspects of Religions or Tribalism in Africa.

Day One: Tuesday, January 13, 2015 Reflection Question: a) Proverb in Own WordsConnections to Religions/Tribalism with Specifics Explained b)

Day One: Tuesday, January 13, 2015 Class: What the proverbs show us about the history and diversity of the cultures in Africa is that they have a wisdom that the world could learn from, but the West often fails to see this. This is because since the time of Triangular Trade and Slavery, the African continent has been viewed through a racist lens. This was only made worse under the time period of Imperialism, where the industrialized nations of Europe felt they had the right to divide up Africa like slices of cake and gobble up their natural resources and destroy the ancient traditions and ways of life. This is what we will be studying in the lesson.

Day One: Tuesday, January 13, 2015 Class: The teacher is going to begin the Interactive Causes of Imperialism PowerPoint Lecture. There are Pair-Share Activities built into the lecture that will have you and your partner working with primary sources relating to each cause. There is a space for these activities built into your graphic organizer. It is very important that you take detailed notes from the PowerPoint Lecture and the photocopied supplemental reading, because this will be the primary material for your Imperialism Editorial that will be a major Summative Assessment for the Third Marking Period.

Day One: Tuesday, January 13, 2015 Homework: You will be reading and taking notes from the photocopied supplemental reading entitled “Part I: Pre-Colonial Congo and Europe’s Interest in Africa”.
