2 Essential and Guiding Questions for the Middle East Unit: Why is it important to develop an appreciation of other cultures? How does religion impact the development of cultures? How has the process of “modernization” affected the Middle East? How has conflict affected the Middle East? How does the culture of the Middle East impact the global community? What are the core beliefs of Judaism, Christianity and Islam? How has Islam affected the development of culture in the Middle East? What events, figures, and processes have impacted the Middle East? What issues currently affect the Middle East? What internal conflicts have shaped the development of the Middle East? How have external conflicts affected perceptions of the Middle East? What factors influence the Middle East’s position in the global community?

3 Monday, October 8, 2012 Quiet Question: Type One Prompt---Read the following TWO quotes and answer the Reflection Questions in response. Quote One: Former World Bank Vice President Ismail Serageldin said, “Many of the wars of the 20 th century were about oil, but the wars of the next century will be about water.” Quote Two: Former United Nations Secretary General Boutros Boutros-Ghali said, “The next war in the Near East will not be about politics, but over water.”

4 Monday, October 8, 2012 Reflection Questions: A. How is water as or more precious than oil? Give examples of situations where this could be the case. B. Where do you think wars would break out over water rights? Why?

5 Monday, October 8, 2012 Group-Share: Turn to your quad of group members and share your responses. – Add information or revise information as needed. – Then as a group answer the following Reflection Question using your background knowledge and the thematic map that is below and projected on the Smartboard. Group Reflection Question: Based upon the map, if war WERE TO BREAK OUT in the Middle East, what countries do you think would be the aggressors (the ones to start the war) and how would they attack/invade and why?

7 Monday, October 8, 2012 Class: Have groups share their responses to the Group Reflection Question. Transition into the Geography of the Middle East. Class: Your notes on the Geography of the Middle East are going to come from TWO sources: Powerpoint Presentation---only about 50% of the material for the notes – The Geography of the Middle East Supplemental Reading----to be downloaded from Ms. Barben’s teacher page---other 50% of the material for the notes. – The Geography Graphic Organizer has been set up to facilitate your note- taking and also to be used as a tool for the labeling of the Middle East Map. So it is imperative that you follow the different categories. – For the Visual Part of the Graphic Organizer, you may print up the images and photos from my Powerpoint and glue them into the notes. You do not have to draw them.

12 Friday, October 12, 2012 Class: Ms. Barben is going to collect the Visiting the Other Students’ Powerpoints Homework Assignment. – Make sure the grade sheet is stapled to the front and your name and class period are filled out. – Pass them up to the person in the first row. Individual/Homework: You have the rest of the class period to finish your TWO MAPS of the Middle East. – Whatever do you not finish in class, it is your homework to finish up over the weekend. – The TWO MAPS will be part of your Notebook Grade.
