The Mexican American War

Expansion in Texas When Mexico gained independence from Spain, Apache and Comanche Indians resisted Mexican attempts at subjugation. Mexico invited U.S. settlers to prevent border violations and to protect the territory from Native Americans.

Texas Fights for Independence As the Anglo population in Texas increased, tension erupted over cultural differences. Mexico restricted immigration of Americans. Mexican and American forces began to clash. Texans eventually achieved their independence.

The Annexation of Texas Texas was not immediately a part of the United States because of the slavery question. It took multiples presidencies for Texas to become a part of the U.S. as a slave state. Mexico was furious!

War with Mexico President Polk believed that war with Mexico would increase the land of the United States. The United States went to war with Mexico and pushed all the way to Mexico City.

America Claims the Spoils of War The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo Mexico agreed on the Rio Grande border with Texas and ceded New Mexico and California to the U.S. The Gadsden Purchase The purchase of the land south of the Gila River for $10 million
