Mr. A Roberts GCSE Resistant Materials Measuring and Marking out

Mr. A Roberts GCSE Resistant Materials It is important to measure accurately when marking out a piece of material to be cut. Plans should show measurements in millimetres or metres. Precision measuring tools include the Micrometer and the Vernier Calipers. Used extensively for engineering applications. Micrometer Vernier Calipers

Mr. A Roberts GCSE Resistant Materials Inside Calipers Inside and Outside Calipers measure awkward shapes such as tubing, or take ‘inside’ measurements. They can be set to fit various distances and then the distance can be measured using a ruler or a micrometer. Outside Calipers

Mr. A Roberts GCSE Resistant Materials Try Square Mitre Square A standard Try square will give a line at 90 ° to an edge A Mitre try square will give a line of 45° and 135 ° it can be used to mitre corners Sliding Bevel A Sliding bevel can be adjusted to give angles between 0 ° to 180 ° Combination Square A Combination square can be used as a try square, a bevel or a depth gauge A Combination Set

Mr. A Roberts GCSE Resistant Materials For unusual shapes a TEMPLATE can be constructed. A template can be made from stiff card or other material cut to the irregular shape. In industry a template can be made from timber or sheet steel. They allow batch production using the template many times. An outside Template using a pencil An inside Template using a scriber

Mr. A Roberts GCSE Resistant Materials When marking out try and avoid excessive waste. A Marking gauge is used when marking timber along the grain. A Try Square is used when marking timber across the grain. A Compass can be used when marking out circles.

Mr. A Roberts GCSE Resistant Materials A Scriber can be used when marking metal with steel rules, templates and squares. Odd leg calipers can be used when marking metal along an edge A centre punch can be used when marking metal before drilling.

Mr. A Roberts GCSE Resistant Materials Rules for Marking out Choose the correct marking out tool for the line, circle, point or shape to be marked out. Choose the correct marking tool for the material Check out how accurate the measurement needs to be Check that the edge of the material is straight if marking out from the edge (Datum edge) Start all measurements from the same starting point (Datum) To reduce waste mark close to a true edge as possible Make sure that marking out is as clear as possible A single clear line is essential
