Blacksmith square Clamping screw It is made in a single thickness. This enables it to lie flat on sheet metal for ease of marking out. The engineer’s bevel can be used to transfer angles from a protractor to the project.

7 These are useful for determining the exact size of sheet metal or small round stock such as wire or thin tubing. Wire or Sheet gauges The screw pitch gauge is used to check the size and type of threads on external surfaces. A depth gauge is useful for checking the depth of holes, rebates or shoulders. This model also has a vernier scale. Feeler gauge This gauge can accurately test very small gaps between components. It is used commonly in the automotive trade.

Ratchet This must be used when closing the spindle onto the object being measured to ensure consistent pressure, and hence an accurate reading. Testing Accuracy Close the spindle against the anvil, (using the ratchet) and check the reading. A micrometer that has been “zeroed” will read zero when the spindle is completely closed.
