History, Chairs and Membership  Since 2005, served as an informal advisory group to State Board of Education and Lt. Gov./Gov. Perdue  Formally established in 2010 by Governor Perdue  Chaired by:  Lt. Governor Walter Dalton  Senator Richard Stevens  Representative Joe Tolson  Membership: up to 30 individuals representing K-12, Community Colleges, University, businesses and community organizations

Structure and Roles  Subcommittees 1. Infrastructure 2. Teaching and Learning 3. Policy  Make recommendations to the Governor regarding: 1. Unified data system to improve educational, economic, and other opportunities 2. Making effective eLearning available K-20 and to all citizens 3. Revising state policies, rules or regulations to maximize the potential of eLearning 4. Forming state, national and global collaborations to enhance eLearning opportunities for NC citizens.

Some Accomplishments  NC Research and Education Network (NCREN) provides affordable, reliable, broadband connectivity to:  All LEAs, UNC campuses and Community Colleges  Many of the Independent Colleges and Universities  Some Charter Schools  NC Virtual Public School, now the second largest in the nation  Enable LEAs to obtain substantial e-rate funding  eLearningNC.gov web portal

Current Focus Areas 1.Transition to a K-12 Cloud and Shared Services model  Foundation for Race to the Top Initiatives  Statewide Learning Management and Instructional Improvement Systems  Identification and security issues  Enable local resources to be reallocated 2.Expanding Online Professional Development 3.eTextbooks and Interactive Digital Learning Resources 4.Statewide Longitudinal Data System 5.Equity of Access, especially in Rural Areas 6.Funding

Commission’s Work Leveraged by  NC Race to the Top grant ($400 million)  Broadband Technology and Opportunities Program (BTOP) grants totaling $146 million for infrastructure for education and public health facilities.
