Properties of Matter Properties are the characteristics, traits, or behaviors that we can use to identify samples of matter and distinguish them from one.
A Physical Property is a property that can be observed without changing the make up of the substance. You just look at it - or measure it. Examples are:

The Point of Today Distinguish between physical and chemical properties. Give examples of physical and chemical properties.

Physical Properties How would you describe someone or something? The weight, height, length, eye color, hair color, etc. would be good items to use to describe someone. It is easy to identify chemicals, compounds and elements based on their physical properties also. These include color, odor, and state of matter to name a few.

Physical Property Any characteristic of a material that you can observe without changing the chemical nature of the matter. EXAMPLES: Color Brittleness Shape Size / Mass Density Boiling Point Melting Point State Temperature

Chemical properties describe how substances form new substances. Chemical Property Depends on the action of the substance in the presence of other substances or added energy (including heat). A characteristic of a substance that indicates if it can undergo a certain chemical change. Chemical properties describe how substances form new substances.

Chemical Property EXAMPLES: Flammable Combustable Reacts with oxygen in air Reacts with water Reacts with acid Is decomposed by electricity Produces a gas when heated Forms a new substance in the presence of a base Changes in the presence of light

The Point of Today Distinguish between physical and chemical properties. Give examples of physical and chemical properties.
