22 The Perimeter of any plane(flat) figure is a measure of the total distance around the outside of the figure. Common examples are finding fencing needed for an area, trimming an object, or creating framing or borders. To find the perimeter of any plane figure simply add up the length of every side of the figure. Perimeter

33 To find the perimeter: = 20 ft. Remember: in a rectangle opposite sides are equal Perimeter 7 ft. 3 ft.

44 The area of a plane (flat) geometric figure is the number of square units of measure it contains. To measure the surface area of an object, first select a standard unit of area suitable to the object to be measured. If you have different size units we usually convert to the smallest unit to calculate with. Standard units of area are based on the square and are called square units. Area

55 For example, a square inch (in 2 ) is the amount of surface area within a square that measures one inch on a side. A square centimetre (cm 2 ) is the amount of surface area within a square that is 1 cm on a side. (See Figure 1.8.) Area 1 square inch (in 2 ) 1 square centimetre (cm 2 ) Square units Figure 1.8

66 What is the area of a rectangle measuring 4 cm by 3 cm? Each square in Figure 1.9 represents 1 cm 2. By simply counting the number of squares, you find that the area of the rectangle is 12 cm 2. Example 1 Figure 1.9

77 You can also find the area by multiplying the length times the width: Area = l  w = 4 cm  3 cm (length) (width) = 12 cm 2 Example 1 Note: cm  cm = cm 2 cont’d

88 The volume of a solid geometric figure is the number of cubic units of measure it contains. In area measurement, the standard units are based on the square and called square units. For volume measurement, the standard units are based on the cube and called cubic units. For example, a cubic inch (in 3 ) is the amount of space contained in a cube that measures 1 in. on each edge. A cubic centimetre (cm 3 ) is the amount of space contained in a cube that measures 1 cm on each edge. Volume

99 A cubic foot (ft 3 ) is the amount of space contained in a cube that measures 1 ft (or 12 in.) on each edge. (See Figure 1.12.) Volume 1 cubic inch (in 3 ) 1 cubic centimetre (cm 3 ) 1 cubic foot (ft 3 ) Cubic units Figure 1.12

10 Figure 1.13 shows that the cubic decimetre (litre) is made up of 10 layers, each containing 100 cm 3, for a total of 1000 cm 3. Volume 1 litre = 1000 cm 3 Litre Figure 1.13

11 Find the volume of a rectangular box 8 cm long, 4 cm wide, and 6 cm high. Suppose you placed one-centimetre cubes in the box, as in Figure On the bottom layer, there would be 8  4, or 32, one-cm cubes. Example 3 Figure 1.14

12 In all, there are six such layers, or 6  32 = 192 one-cm cubes. Therefore, the volume is 192 cm 3. You can also find the volume of a rectangular solid by multiplying the length times the width times the height: V = l  w  h = 8 cm  4 cm  6 cm = 192 cm 3 Example 3 Note: cm  cm  cm = cm 3 cont’d
