IAEA International Atomic Energy Agency Advanced Workshop « School for Drafting Regulations on Radiation Safety » RER/9/096 Regional Planning Meeting 2 February 2010

IAEA Rationale Many countries in the region have recently developed / revised their legal instruments for the control of radiation sources Others are in final stages of drafting There is a need to develop / amend a comprehensive set of regulations to implement the new Laws IAEA assistance has been requested (expert missions, scientific visits)

IAEA Rationale To optimize resources To foster harmonization and regional cooperation To ensure full compliance with IAEA standards and other international undertakings (EU directives) It is proposed to organize a series of workshops called “School for drafting regulations”

IAEA Objectives To respond to requests of assistance To provide useful reference material To share experience of more advanced countries To leave ownership and responsibility of preparing regulations to the national regulatory bodies To have participants produce a draft during the course of the workshop

IAEA Envisaged Road Map First workshop to focus on radiation safety and the control of sources First workshop to focus on Balkan Countries First workshop to be used as a pilot event, here in Vienna Further workshops to be organized in the near future

IAEA First Workshop - structure Planned for May Open to 14 participants, primarily from Balkan Countries Candidates nomination opened until Feb 15 Candidates should be regulatory staff responsible for drafting or enacting regulations, with knowledge and experience in regulatory activities Selected candidates will be contacted prior to the workshop to specify exact needs, current national status,…
