New Math Progression WV Next Generation Standards and Objectives

West Virginia chose our students’ learning progression over course names. The content is the same; the difference comes in the delivery of the content in the first two courses (Math I and Math II – next slide). Students will now address topics in algebra seamlessly through their first three years in high school mathematics. They will not be “taking a year off” from the algebraic concepts to learn geometry concepts in isolation. This model mirrors the international model of our highest performing countries.

West Virginia chose our students’ learning progression over course names. Achieve Model Pathways Math I 1.Relationships between Quantities 2.Linear and Exponential Relationship 3.Reasoning with Equations 4.Descriptive Statistics 5.Congruence, Proof and Construction 6.Connecting Algebra and Geometry through Coordinates A course called Algebra I 1.Relationships and Quantities 2.Linear and Exponential Relationship 3.Descriptive Statistics 4.Expressions and Equations 5.Quadratic Functions and Modeling Math II 1.Extending Number System 2.Quadratic Functions and Modeling 3.Expressions and Equations 4.Probability 5.Proof and Trigonometry 6.Circles A course called Geometry 1.Congruence, Proof and Construction 2.Proof and Trigonometry 3.Three Dimensional 4.Connecting Algebra and Geometry through Coordinates 5.Circles 6.Probability Math III (Same course as the Algebra II different order 1.Inferences and Conclusions 2.Polynomial, Rational and Radical 3.Trig Functions 4.Modeling with functions A course called Algebra II (Same as Math III different order) 1.Polynomial, Rational and Radical 2.Trig Functions 3.Modeling with functions 4.Inferences and Conclusions
