Ways We Use Computers Brainstorm ways people use computers

Use the Internet Wisely The Internet allows us to communicate with people all over the world! What you can do on the Web Talk with friends Learn new things Have fun Link to information about what you can do on the web

Use the Internet Wisely When you are on the Web, be safe and responsible. Be respectful to others. Follow the directions of your teacher or other adult. Don’t share your passwords, last name, your address or your phone number unless you have the permission of an adult. Brainstorm what it means to be respectful. Explain that while at school we use computers for learning and it is important to follow the directions from teachers. Explain that just like they know that it is not safe to talk to strangers, when they are online they also need to be safe from strangers. They should not share their last name, address, or phone number…there are times when it might be appropriate but only with an adult’s permission and help.

Use the Internet Wisely Watch out for these when you are on the Web! Pictures that are scary or inappropriate Rude or bad language People who are mean or bother you Link to a video about the types of negative people who students might encounter online Discuss what students should do if they encounter these situations at school, home or at a friend’s house

Avoid dangerous situations! People can lie and pretend to be someone else online. Some people use the Internet to be mean to others. Things people (including you) do and say online have real consequences. Link to a McGruff video about internet safety.

Dealing with Bullies! Avoid the bully. Ask an adult for help. Try to talk it out. Say, "Why are you being mean to me?" Speak up. Say, "Stop picking on me!" Stick with your friends. If you have a friend who bullies, take a stand and tell your friend to stop. If someone is hurting a kid, tell an adult. Adapted from http://www.mcgruff.org/Advice/bullies.php

Use the Internet Wisely Let’s review what to look out for on the Web! Always tell an adult when you are unsure what to do online or feel scared, uncomfortable or threatened! Link is to a review activity of the types of negative people students might encounter online

Be Safe Online! Discuss and review rules. Ask students to share rules that they have for internet use at home.
