What is PBIS? A systems approach for establishing the social culture and behavioral supports needed for a school to be an effective learning environment for all students.

Main Messages PBIS deeply supports and incorporates asset building work of Project Cornerstone and character focus of Life skills Supporting social behavior is central to achieving academic gains.

PBIS IS NOT …… A curriculum or packaged program Only about tangible reinforcers Only about discipline A Special Education Program

Tier 1 Universal Interventions All settings, all students Preventive, proactive Tier 2 Targeted Group Interventions Some students (at-risk) High efficiency Rapid response Tier 3 Intensive, Individual Interventions Individual Students Assessment-based Intense, durable procedures ~80% of Students ~15% ~5% School-wide PBIS

Define School-wide Expectations for Social Behavior Identify 3-5 Expectations Short Statements Positive, Memorable Statements What to do, not what to avoid doing Examples: Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Safe, Be Kind, Be a Friend, Be-there-be-ready, Respect self, others, property

Teach Behavioral Expectations Transform broad school-wide expectations into specific, observable behaviors Teach in the actual settings where behaviors are to occur Teach (a) the words, and (b) the actions
