Evaluation: How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Age Young model so will appeal to a younger demographic. My target audience. Model not shown in a negative light. Older looking model will appeal to an older audience. Model seems more sexual but not in a negative light Older looking model will again appeal to an older demographic. Model seems aggressive. Could be seen in a negative light.

Gender Shows male as more feminine and less aggressive which are stereotypical masculine traits. Subverts from normal codes of magazines. Women still shown as submissive but not as sexual objects. Keeps stereotypical gender roles. Male shown in musical pose. Shows that it is a music magazine. Non masculine pose which subverts from typical codes and conventions of magazines.

Ethnicity Article is about a black female. I did this because black people are usually under-represented in main stream media so I subverted from typical codes and conventions of media. She is shown in a positive light rather than negative. All white female which appeals to the white dominated society we live in today. Females seen as models which suggests beauty. Since they’re all white could suggest only white is beautiful. Dominant ideology. One black male which suggests significance. Appeals to audience of genre. Idea would’ve been different on an indie magazine. However because this is featured in a rap magazine it adheres to stereotypes.

Social Class Jewellery suggests a higher social class. Although in my magazine it is not the main focus which suggest that it suitable for all social classes. Lots of jewellery on model which suggest wealth. More prominent than on my magazine as jewellery is edited to make it a focus of the magazine. Tiara suggests royalty. Also “King” suggests royalty. Neither shown in a positive or negative light in this magazine.

Sexuality Men shown in more feminine poses. Less threatening and aggressive which are mainly masculine traits. Normalising femininity in males. Females on the page but none showing stereotypical masculine traits. Adhering to typical codes and conventions of all magazines. Man shown in a non aggressive pose. Smiling shows a feminine side and less threatening. Subverts from other magazines.
