Semester

AIMS  To give you some important medical terms for the study of medicine, nursing and pharmacy.  To teach you skills how to analyse a medical word to find the meaning  To understand a good number of word parts(root suffix, prefix) that make up the medical words  To give an overview of the Organisation of the Body in the English Language.

Aims  To study in more detail 2 systems of the body in English  To give you examples of word parts used for the future study for your major  To give you some medical words used in the hospital and ways to analyse and memorise them

Course content  Chapter 1 Basic medical word structure  Chapter 1 Word analysis-look at the medical word. Divide it into parts analyse the word and find the meaning  The project- self-study project relating to a system of the body.  Chapter 2 —The Organisation of the Body.  Body Systems Appendix 1 The Digestive and cardiovascular System

Course assessment Continuous Assessment 20%-One homework assignment weekly and 2 or 3 of these will be marked. A lot of marks are lost for disruption in class and poor attendance.  Two monthly exams 30%- one before the mid term and one after the midterm.  Mid-term 1 exam 15%  Midterm 2 is a poster assessment 15%  Final Exam 20%

What is Medical Terminology?  Medical workers use this language to describe objects, situations and to communicate to each other in their area of medicine.  The words -or terms – that make up the language of medicine is called: MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY
